We had been having connection issues since before Christmas, but I thought it was an outside problem. Charter being Charter, as it were.It took a bit of tracking down, but eventually, we realized that the old Linksys was in its sixth year, which for computer gear so critical to everything we use, is ancient. And it was failing.Charter has been ramping up their broadband speed for the past year, so I knew it was likely the old router couldn't handle the higher speed. But it was more than that. It was not broadcasting a strong enough signal. Diagnosis: Tired old router needs replacement and honorable retirement.Amazon isn't cheaper for everything, but for electronics, they usually have the best prices and selection. If you have Amazon Prime, they are offer the fastest delivery at no charge.I'm a real fan of Amazon. They honor their promises. If you don't get your package, they send another. If the product doesn't work, they refund your money or send a replacement -- your choice. They are nice when you call with a problem. Rather than go over to our local Best Buy or Walmart, we went online. We were right. Amazon had great prices on a huge selection of routers. There were so many to choose from ... and the technology has changed so much since the last time we installed a router ... most of our time was spent trying to figure out what the descriptions meant, and which router was the right one for our house.Owen said NetGear was easiest to install. Even though we'd been using Linksys for so many years. Since he was doing the installation, I saw no reason to argue the point. We settled on NETGEAR AC750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Gigabit Router (R6050). At $81.99 plus tax, with free 2-day shipping, it seemed likely to do the job. We ordered it on Saturday and it (surprise!) arrived Monday morning. No, I didn't pay extra for speedy shipping. They are just very fast. It's installed. It took about an hour, including some hassling with the wireless printer and some more hassling with the Roku. There's one more Roku in the bedroom I will have to reset plus three Kindles. My son has hooked up his laptop and tablet. My three computers and my husband's two are up and running. You think we have enough wireless stuff around here? The router works really well. No dead spots in the house anymore! Not one, not anywhere. Finally, we have full coverage through both floors and in every room. What could NetGear do to improve the experience? Provide better instructions!Every problem we encountered was not a problem. It was just something for which no instructions or explanation is provided. I know everyone thinks tech writers are obsolete. I AM a tech writer. But seriously, folks. How much could it cost to hire a tech writer for a couple of days to write proper, English-language instructions? We work cheap!Reading through reviews on Amazon, I'm betting 90% of the complaints were failures to understand what to do. Better instructions would solve the problem. Can you say "Happy Ending?" Sometimes, things work out better than you expect. This is one of those times! Had this router since Oct 2015 and it has been a very good router, easy to setup. It is not a high end router but I am satisfied with the amount of options/features in this router. The range and speed is good and I hardly ever have to restart it even when the internet goes down, once it detects live internet connection again its back online without having to constantly restart it hoping that it picks up the internet connection (talking about you wndr3300). It is fully compatible with Xbox live and PSN, no compatibility issues with either service. No compatibility issues with Comcast either I get my advertised speed. The Netgear Genie app for mobile devices is cool but its very basic and you cannot control a lot of the features with it, most features you will have to log into the router through PC/Laptop to access. For the price this router has exceeded all my expectations. 9.5/10 Read more 3 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuse Douglas McCausland5.0 out of 5 starsNot bleeding edge, but it does a great job September 26, 2016Verified Purchase[purchased mid-end June 2016, so as of currently writing this review end-September 2016, everything that follows has been from the first 3 months of use]Settled on this (used, good condition, "packaging has damage") to get a simple (in terms of not combined with a modem) router that I could use to futureproof my home network when upgrading from DSL to cable, both with (1) gigabit ethernet and (2) 802.11ac Wi-Fi.Unlike the combined DSL modem-router/gateway I previously had from Verizon, I don't have to restart this router if the modem has connection issues (which it hasn't, btw), but if there was a modem issue, I don't have to bring my LAN down and back up just to troubleshoot the internet connection. Only when it hasn't had electrical power (e.g., a circuit trips or I unplug things in the process of rearranging things and cords) is when it's gone "down", and I've otherwise deliberately restarted it because of a firmware update.Speaking of firmware, this gives plenty of options and flexibility in both basic and advanced menu versions. HOWEVER, I don't think I'm able to turn off WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). There has been a security exploit for WPS in which the PIN can be brute-forced, and the push-button, while convenient, lets anyone with access to the router connect to your network without the password. It would be nice if I could turn WPS off on this router (although maybe I'm not looking in the right place?), but I was looking for an inexpensive 802.11ac gigabit ethernet router, not one to flash with Tomato/DD-WRT/etc. ... And if someone DOES decide to break into my network, this router at least still offers a list of associated devices & MAC addresses, so I could turn to MAC address filtering. Although I haven't had a need/reason to use and explore all the advanced features/options, it's nice to see that they're there and this this router certainly is more configurable than a cable/telco-provided combination modem-router/gateway.Notes about ReadySHARE:(1) for my old USB, not-networking-capable printer, ReadySHARE Printer ... kind of works. I mean it works well enough. I have to connect via Netgear's USB control app on a computer, but it currently beats leaving a computer on and connected as a print server in terms of practicality. I can't print from my phone this way, but I would need a dedicated computer as a network print server if I wanted mobile printing. That being said, I rarely ever print from my phone, so again, it's more practical for me to leave the printer near the router and plug it in there when I want to print from a computer without being tethered to the printer.(2) The other day, I tried using the media server feature to watch video from a flash drive on my PS3 over the network. So, the PS3 detected the media server, but I saw a lot of "Unsupported Format", so I just ended up streaming them from PS3 media server on my computer over the network because I didn't want to play around with settings and transcoding.(Side note: before getting the router, I had noticed connecting an older and then newer computer to the modem via ethernet and noticed that a red/amber "link" flashing light indicated 10/100 "fast ethernet" while a blue flashing link light indicated 10/100/1000 "gigabit ethernet", and this is a nice visual confirmation that the LAN and WAN ports of this router are good to go for gigabit speeds, even if my cable internet connection is the bottleneck at ~50Mbps/~5Mbps upload/download... But if I DID have an internet connection closer to gigabit speeds, it could be with a different provider that requires a different modem/gateway, but I'd keep on using this router as long as it's working and not nearing EOL / obsoletion.) March 13, 2015Verified PurchaseI work for one of the biggest broadband providers in the nation, and recently have speeds up to 100mbps download speeds. I was using a N+300 router before and on WiFi was getting speeds of 20-30mbps. So I upgraded to this bad boy and now I can reach speeds up to 80-110mbps. Love this router and it's so user friendly. Easy to set up and for the advanced user the port forwarding is simple. I recommend this to who ever want to upgrade there wifi. No need to go out and spend $200-300 on a AC router when this on can go the job.
