It will act as a NAS, and it comes with software that will allow you to automatically backup your important files to the drive (purchased separately) installed. It is large, but relatively attractive in style. Setup was simple and straight forward. WiFi coverage is more than adequate for my home which is not large. It supports AirPrint and a number of other convenient features. It comes with an application to help you manage it which is easy to use and relatively useful. The app is a bit of "bloatwear" though, and seems to embed itself into the wireless management of Windows which is unnecessary and unwelcome, though almost everyone who gets the chance to do so seems to do this.Unfortunately, this is when the positive stops. After 4 months of operation, the Ethernet port that connects it to the cable modem and ultimately the Internet has failed. I contacted their support staff via a web chat session. While typing in the description of the problem to their tech, he felt the need to let me know that if I didn't finish in 3 minutes time he would disconnect me.This message left me with the warm feeling that the management of their silly call center is more interested in managing their numbers than servicing their customers. Nice.Shortly into my chat session with support from NetGear, the tech sent me the following message..."Neil: Please be informed that your WNDR4700 has 90 days of Support Warranty and 1 year of Hardware Warranty from the date of purchase, which was on Feb 27, 2015.Please be informed that the device is already beyond the 90 days of Support Warranty from its date of purchase..."I guess the intent here on the part of NetGear is to hedge their bet on the hardware warranty. It appears to me that the purpose is to have you pay them for "Support" in order to identify a hardware failure rendering the hardware warranty useless.Never the less (This is the only positive part of the experience.), the tech I was web chatting with didn't ask for money and we proceeded. I suspect that when I call their support number, I'll find that I'll need to pay them somehow once they figure out I've had the AP more than 90 days.Ultimately the tech came to the conclusion that suddenly after 4 months of the AP operating normally, my ISP (Xfinity) has suddenly decided to only accept traffic from the MAC address of my computer, and what I really need to do is configure MAC Spoofing to solve the problem. In order to come to the conclusion above, I think it's a fair assumption that NetGear and/or their tech believes Xfinity isn't smart enough to use the MAC address of the cable modem to identify my home, they really need to identify a MAC address on the other side of the cable modem to ensure they have a contract with their customer and/or Xfinity still believes most of their customers still have a desktop or tower directly connected to their network without the use of a firewall of some sort and/or WiFi.The configuration of MAC spoofing seems to require a hard Ethernet connection to the AP so that the AP can copy my MAC address. This connection causes the connection to the Internet through my iPhone's hot spot to fail.Of course, conveniently, he only does web chat support and there’s no way for him to call me or have someone else call me and he has to disconnect from me leaving me to follow the silly MAC spoofing instructions and I guess I'm supposed to call their support number, wait on hold for who knows how long, only to start the same silly game over.Obviously the silly MAC spoofing plan didn't work. The only question remaining is: "Should I pursue them to replace the failing device while spending a few more hours on the phone "troubleshooting", only to possibly have another device fail, or do I cut my losses and move on to a device from another company?". June 20, 2018Style: DisklessVerified PurchaseLike all of my Netgear router/AP/extender/media hub purchases, this device has performed admirably since it was installed in September 2014. The speed is great and the signal is very stable for an N-based router, especially on the 5Ghz band that I use for my backbone connection to my extenders. I have never had a service interruption on the 5Ghz network... also, I have never had to reboot the router on purpose to solve any issue related to the device itself. The only issues that I have had with it are: (1) the internal drive slot seems to overexert any drive installed such that they have a relatively quick death; (2) same issue as (1) for any USB drive installed; and (3) the 2.4Ghz band is not quite as robust as the 5Ghz band though turning it off and on again in the menu has always resolved the problem so I have not had to reboot it.This router provides the only path to the internet for the rest of my network, as well as the DHCP service, DNS proxy service, Dynamic DNS client login, and time proxy service. Like all good routers, there are configuration options to turn on risky services like UPNP as well as port services and trigger ports to be directed to specific hosts. There are also specific options for various NAT traversal protocols dealing with SIP, VPN, and other specialized applications. The device can be setup as an AP, a router, or a specialized WiFi repeater[this last option is no longer recommended due to security concerns]. It supports various IPv6 protocol options, static routes, and RIP broadcasting, and it seems to have no issues with routing the 50 or so devices that exist on my network at any given time in both IP formats. It also has options for a single guest network on each band, as well as various parental control options, internet availability scheduling, and site/service blacklisting. There area default QoS rules to prioritize network traffic and you can add more manually. There is also a traffic meter which can popup web browser warning when you get close to your specifiable data cap, as well as disconnect your internet service when you reach it.This router is still well-supported and a security update was released in the first quarter of 2018. The router will automatically download and install the update in the 'Advanced -> Administration -> Firmware Upgrade' menu... and so far although I have backed up my configurations each time, it has managed to keep the configuration information intact. The logs are very impressive for a home router.... as you can see any attacks with IPs and times, as well as local network happenings... and they can be emailed from the GUI or configured to auto-magically email using a defined server on a defined schedule. The only things that are missing in my opinion are: (1) The DHCP fixed to support more than a class C of addresses [253 devices are currently supported in DHCP]; (2) More DDNS service options [this seems to vary and currently only supports DynDNS.org]; and (3) Support for DFS channels on the 5ghz band.Overall, there is alot to like about this router and the only way to get ever option available is with a professional router instead of a home router... or to run a specialized router OS like OpenWRT or pfSense. This router and its immediate kin are highly recommended based on my experience of their stability, reliability and support. I have a strange DSL setup so it wasn't just plug and play but pretty darn close. Had to log on to the device and change it's IP address to get it to work. But pretty easy to do. And the device figured out my telecom DSL connection and asked for my DSL username and password. The router also does great on uploading media to social networking sites. My old router would time out and not allow me to post high quality pictures. This router does. The reason for only 3 stars? This device has the ability to use a SATA hard drive for media sharing. Unfortunately in the user manual (online and the setup hard copy included with the device) the link to the hard drive compatibility web page is broken. And to get web help by chatting you need the serial number. So if you aren't near the device you can't get web chat help. I had to use the online web email support option. In their favor they replied back within 3 hours. However, it was obvious the person didn't read my comments or they don't know anything about the device as they sent me a link to USB compatible drives instead of SATA compatible drives. I also tried an internet search on compatible HD drives and couldn't find anything like that either on the internet in general nor the Netgear site. The bottom line is I would buy this router again and I was willing to give it 4 or 5 stars. However, if you are providing an online user manual maybe you should check that the links do actually work. And have someone capable of actually reading the help request. I didn't even mention USB drives in my request for help.
